Instructions for the Board Game Lie Detector

The object of "Lie Detector" is to find a guilty party of a crime from among the 24 potential suspects represented on game cards. Each "Suspect Card" is assigned a clue that can be proven true or false through the use of the game's spring-loaded "lie detector" machine. Through smart note-taking and good deduction, players use the process of elimination to guess who the real culprit is. "Lie Detector," which debuted in the 1960s, was for two to four players.

Instructions

  1. General Instructions

    • 1

Shuffle the "Guilty" cards and place them on the table with the red side down. Put the top "Guilty" card into the back of the Lie Detector, then turn the device face up on the table.

    • 2

Shuffle the "Suspect" cards and deal them face up until all players have the same amount. Give each player two "Secret Information" cards with the yellow side up, as well as two "Summons" cards and one "Arrest" card. Spread the cards out with the color side up, then instruct each player to take a score peg and place it at the start of the scoreboard.

    • 3

Begin the game with the dealer, then continue to the left until everyone has had a chance to give a Lie Detector test to any suspect card face up in their hand. Players can use a "Summons" card on any "Suspect" card that has already been turned face down or belongs to another player, then use the Lie Detector on that suspect.

    • 4

Use the Lie Detector to check the "Secret Information" cards in your possession. Place the used card yellow side up on the Interrogation Box.

    • 5

Utilize your "Arrest" card when you think a suspect is guilty. Say, "I arrest this subject" as you place the blue side down next to the card, then check the back of the "Guilty" card to see if you're correct. Sit out of the rest of the game if you are incorrect and do not reveal the correct answer to the other players. Gain five points if you are correct as well as an extra point for every "Suspect" card face up in the hands of other players.

    • 6

Award the rank of "Chief Detective" to the player who wins the game by reaching a top hole on the Scoreboard.

    Lie Detector Test Instructions

    • 7

Fill the Interrogation Box of the Lie Detector with the "Suspect" card down.

    • 8

Read the Suspect's Testimony, then reset the knob.

    • 9

Pick up the probe and push it gently into the hole in the card. Wait for the needle to point to "True" or "False."

    • 10

Examine your "Suspect" cards and turn any over that are eliminated based on the information you gained. Keep the card you tested, and turn others face down or keep them face up to confuse other players.
