Instructions for the Game of Sorry

Based on Parcheesi, the game of Sorry! was introduced in 1934 and has been published by many companies including Hasbro and Parker Brothers. Sorry! is a family board game for two to four players and recommended for players ages 6 and older. Players take turns drawing cards and moving colorful pieces around the board towards a specified destination. According to game website, Board Game Geek, typical game play lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that all pieces are included with your Sorry! game. The game includes the game board, a deck of cards without 6s and 9s and a total of 16 pawns (four of each color.)

    • 2

Have each player select a color and place the four pawns of that color on the "Start" space of the corresponding color on the board.

    • 3

Place the shuffled deck of cards on the board in the space that says "Place Pack Here."

    • 4

Choose which player will start the game. After each player's turn, game play proceeds to the next player to the left.

    • 5

Draw the top card from the draw pile to determine the number of spaces you will move your pawn.

    • 6

Move each of your pawns out of the "Start" space to the entry circle outside of the "Start" space by drawing a one or a two. If you draw a one, move one pawn to the circle and end your turn. If you draw a two, move a pawn to the circle and draw again. You cannot have two pawns on the entry circle at one time. If another player's pawn is in your entry circle when you move your pawn to it, bump that player's pawn back to its "Start" space.

    • 7

Continue taking turns with other players. Draw a card and move one of your pawns clockwise around the board (unless otherwise specified) in accordance with the number shown on the card. Move your pawn backwards four spaces if you draw a four. If you draw a seven, you may move your pawn forward seven spaces or split the move between two pawns to move a total of seven spaces. If you draw a 10, move forward 10 spaces or move a pawn backwards one space. After drawing an 11, move your pawn forward 11 spaces or switch the position of one of your pawns with the position of an opponent's pawn (both pawns must be in play.) Drawing a "Sorry!" card allows you to take one pawn from your "Start" space and place it on a space occupied by an opponent, bumping that player's pawn back to its "Start" space. If you have no pawns in the "Start" space or there are no opponent pawns to switch places with, forfeit your turn. If you draw a two, draw again, whether you were able to move or not. If you cannot move any of your pawns the number of spaces shown on the card, forfeit your turn (unless you have drawn a two.)

    • 8

Allow any pawn that has been moved backwards, at least two spaces past the "Start" space, to move forward into the "Safety Area," if in accordance with the number on your drawn card. This rule makes it possible for pawns to be moved into the "Safety Area" without traveling forward around the board.

    • 9

Move your opponent's pawn back to its "Start" space if you land on a space it is occupying. Only one pawn may occupy a space. If your only move is to land on a space already occupied by your own pawn, forfeit your turn.

    • 10

Move one of your pawns each time you can, even if it is to your disadvantage. You may not forfeit your turn if you are able to move one of your pieces.

    • 11

Slide your pawn if you land, by exact count, on a space with a triangle of a color that is not your own. Slide your pawn forward, following the line and landing on the ending circle.

    • 12

Shuffle the cards in the discard pile and move them to the draw pile when the draw pile is depleted.

    • 13

Win the game by landing all four of your pawns on the "Home" space by exact count.
