How to Play Scattergories by Parker Brothers

Scattergories is a challenging word game played with two to six players. The object of the game is to fill in a list of categories with words that begin with the same letter. If your answers match other players you receive no score for those words. The winning player has the highest total at the end of the game. Only a word that begins with the key letter is used as the first word in your answer and the same word cannot be used more than once in a round. For younger players there is Scattergories Junior, which consists of two rounds instead of three and there are variations that match the age level of the players.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble each folder with the answer and category cards; the game includes three cards for each folder.

    • 2

Pass out the pencils and folders to each player; be sure everyone has the same list number in his folder.

    • 3

Set the timer by turning it to the furthest position.

    • 4

Choose a player to roll the die, which will indicate the letter used in the current round. Have another player ready to push start on the timer when everyone is ready. Then each player writes down as many words as possible beginning with the letter on the die and matching the category listed on her card.

    • 5

Stop writing as soon as the timer goes off. Each player reads his answers and corrects his own card. If his answers match a word that is called, the player must cross it off, and no points are scored for that word. Continue until all players have read their lists aloud, and score one point for each correct word.

    • 6

Reset the timer and continue the game until all three rounds are completed. The player with the highest number of points wins the game. In case of a tie, play one more round between the players who have tied. The player with the most points then wins the game.
