Collectible Monopoly Games

Since its debut by Parker Brothers in 1935, Monopoly has become a staple in many American households. While the original version of Monopoly is the most common, Parker Brothers has also created collectible Monopoly versions that are sought out by board game enthusiasts, such as the Franklin Mint collectible Monopoly game and the Disney Monopoly game. The White Box and Black Box versions of Monopoly, made in 1934, are rare collector's items.
  1. Franklin Mint Monopoly Collector's Edition

    • Since Monopoly is all about money and the luxury it can provide, the Franklin Mint created a deluxe, grand edition of the famous game in 1991. A high-end purchase, the Franklin Mint Monopoly Collector's Edition cost $595 in 2010 and contains actual pieces of gold and silver. Each token in the set has 24-karat gold accents, and silver accents are found throughout the hardwood-framed board. The Franklin Mint version offers you the opportunity to use twice as much money as is normally allotted and has built-in drawers where you can store your earnings. In this deluxe edition, you also receive your own "Real Estate Portfolio." The Franklin Mint Monopoly Collector's Edition is authenticated and approved by Parker Brothers.

    Disney Monopoly

    • The Disney edition of Monopoly is another highly sought collectible board game. Also made by Parker Brothers, the Disney Monopoly game offers you the chance to use your favorite characters, such as Dumbo, Pinocchio, Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, as tokens. Instead of buying properties such as Boardwalk and Park Place, you purchase movie "properties," such as "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King" and "101 Dalmatians." Scrooge McDuck, the famous Disney banker, is featured on all of the Monopoly money.

White Box and Black Box Monopoly

    • The White Box and Black Box versions of Monopoly are rare collectibles, as they were created by Charles Darrow in 1934, a year before the game was sold to Parker Brothers. That year, there were 1,000 White Box Monopoly games and 7,500 Black Box Monopoly games made in total. The White Box Monopoly game featured exactly what the title asserts, a white box, with the game board found inside the set. Those who bought the Black Box Monopoly game had to purchase their game board separately. The White Box Monopoly game was known as the deluxe edition, which was why fewer were made. When the Parker Brothers took over, they changed the white and black boxes to include their company name on the front. Pre-Parker Brothers White and Black Box versions are rarely found and are mostly owned by collectors.
