How to Play America's Spirit Trivia Game

America's Spirit is a board game that challenges the player on how much they know about the history of the United States. The person who demonstrates the greatest depth of knowledge wins. The aim of the game is to be the first player to have raised their flag to the top of their respective flagpole. To do this, you must answer questions correctly on American places, people, things and each other. It's a little bit like Snakes and Ladders, or Chutes and Ladders, but more like Trivial Pursuit.

Instructions

  1. Setting Up

    • 1

Ensure that there will be no less than 2 players and no more than 8 competing in the game.

    • 2

Set up the game by popping out the American flag playing pieces from their holder and placing them into the stands of corresponding color. Place the each flag at the start of the same color flagpole. Each player (or teams of two) should choose a flag playing piece.

    • 3

Place the 280 Americology cards in a stack to the right of the board. Place the 60 Whaddaya Think? and 60 Who Am I? cards in two separate stacks to the left of the board. Shuffle each pile properly before beginning. Hand each player, or team, one Whaddaya Think? notepad and provide them with pencils or pens.

    Playing the Game

    • 4

Determine which player goes first by judging whose birthday is the closest to the 4th of July. He should pick up an Americology card from the stack and hand it to the person on his right, who then reads from the Instant America section from the card. If the game is being played in teams, then the player should hand the card to his teammate.

    • 5

Turn the sand timer to begin the 30 second countdown. The player whose turn it is should attempt to guess the three names (either person, place or thing) listed under the Instant America section of the drawn Americology card. The three names on the card will always relate to American history and culture.

The reader of the card may offer as many tips or hints to the player as possible but may not say any of the words printed on the card. For each correct guess, the player's flag piece moves up one notch on his respective flagpole. If the reader of the card uses any of the words printed under the Instant America section, then the turn ends and he moves down one notch on his respective flagpole.

    • 6

Continue guessing until the end of the 30 seconds. Once the timer has run out, or all three names have been guessed, the reader of the card then asks the player the two printed questions found on the Americology card. For each correct answer, the player moves up one notch on the flagpole.

The maximum a player can move up from one Americology card is 5 notches.

If a player guesses all three names and answers both question correctly, then all players draw and get to play a Whaddaya Think? card.

If a player does not provide the information required to all five steps, then his turn is over.

    • 7

Draw a Whaddaya Think? card if a player provides all five pieces of required information during his turn. All players must draw a card.

The player reads aloud the question on his card and writes down the answer pertaining to himself in his notepad. He must answer truthfully. All other players or teams must try to guess what he has answered.

If any of the opposition players or a teams guesses correctly, then he and the player playing his Whaddaya Think? card move up one notch on his respective flagpoles.

If no one guesses correctly then the player does not move and the player to his right plays his Whaddaya Think? card.

    • 8

Finish a turn if a player fails to provide the answers to all five things required from him by the Americology card. It is then the turn of the player to his right. Indeed, if a player answers all three names and two questions correctly, then the turn ends once each player has played their Whaddaya Think? card.

    • 9

Land on an American Icon notch to be able to draw a Who Am I? card at the end of a player's turn. The player should hand it to his teammate or the player to his right, to be read.

The reader then chooses one of the two questions on the card and reads it to the player.

There are five clues per question, which should be read one by one to the player. The player may guess the answer to the question at any time, however if he is wrong the turn ends. The player must listen to the first clue.

The fewer clues the player has had before he answers, the further he moves up his flagpole.

The exact rules are as follows:

If the player answers correctly after 1 clue, he moves up 5 notches.

If he answers correctly after 2 clues, he moves up 4 notches.

If he answers correctly after 3 clues, he moves up 3 notches.

If he answers correctly after 4 clues, he moves up 2 notches.

If he answers correctly after 5 clues, he moves up 1 notch.

A player can only guess once. If he is incorrect, his turn ends.

    • 10

End a turn if a player fails to answer all questions on the Americology card, if each player has played a Whaddaya Think? card or if a Who Am I? card is played.

If a player's turn ends, the person to his right begins their turn.

    • 11

Win the game by being the first player to get his flag to the top of his corresponding flagpole.
