Electronic Dartboard Mounting Regulations

Electronic dartboards simplify dart game scoring. They are made by several different manufacturers and provide scoring for a variety of dart games. Even though they differ in appearance, the boards must be mounted to meet the proper dimensions set forth by the World Darts Federation in England and adopted by the American Darts Organization.
  1. Mounted Height of the Dartboard

    • Select a wall to mount your dart board that is plumb. The wall must not be canted forward or backward at the top or bottom of the wall. The center of the bulls eye must measure exactly 5 feet 8 inches from the floor. The floor should be level and true. If the floor runs uphill or downhill away from the face of the board it will affect the accuracy of thrown darts.

    Throwing Distance to the Dartboard

    • The distance from the face of the board to the throwing line must be exactly 7 feet 9-1/4 inches. This distance is usually verified by measuring the diagonal from the center of the bulls eye to the throwing line. This diagonal measurement must be 9 feet 7-1/2 inches. The throwing line is marked on the floor with a black line, tape or an oche. The oche is a raised strip of wood 1 by 1 by 24 inches firmly anchored to the floor. Players must keep both feet behind the oche and may not place either foot on the oche.

    Provide Power to the Dartboard

    • It is best to run the power cord from the electronic board straight down the wall to an outlet, or to an extension cord.

    Lighting the Dartboard

    • Dartboards for regular play must be lighted with a minimum of 100 watts. Dartboards used in finals matches must be lighted by two 100-watt bulbs. Bulbs must be mounted in shielded reflectors and placed so they do not shine in the dart thrower's eyes as he stands at the oche. Make sure no shadows are cast on the dartboard.

Importance of Mounting the Dartboard Accurately

    • Mounting dimensions affect scoring

Darts is a game of millimeters. If the board you practice or play on does not meet mounting standards it will affect the outcome of each thrown dart. If the distance from the oche to the board is under the regulation distance, the darts will enter the board high. A longer throwing distance will result in low darts at the board. When you are attempting to hit an area as small as ¼ by ¼ inch, any variance from the regulations will affect the darts, and the scores achieved.
