Directions for Chutes and Ladders

Chutes and Ladders is a classic childhood game played by millions of children. Originally called Snakes and Ladders in India, the modern-day version was created by Milton Bradley in the 1950s and is now distributed by Hasbro. Chutes and Ladders teaches children morals and consequence. Do a good deed and you will be one step closer to reaching your goal, but do a bad deed and you will fall further behind. Played with 2 to 4 players and recommended for ages 3 and up, this game can easily be played by toddlers learning to count.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick one of four pawns to play. Set extra pawns aside.

    • 2

Spin the spinner to see who goes first. The player with the highest number begins the game. Put pawns off the game board near square No. 1.

    • 3

Spin the spinner to see what number of squares you need to move. This will be from one to six spaces. Start on square No. 1 and move your pawn the direction of the numbers from one to 100.

    • 4

Land on a square that has a picture of the end of a ladder and move up the ladder to a higher-numbered square. A picture of a ladder may have a child mowing the lawn. His reward, upon moving up the ladder, is going to the circus.

    • 5

Land on a square that has a picture of the top of a chute and slide down the chute to a lower-numbered square. A picture of a chute may have a child eating too many cookies and the resulting consequence, after sliding down the chute, is a tummy ache.

    • 6

End your turn if you land on a square that passes through a chute or a ladder, has no picture, has an arrow, or a picture square at the top of a ladder or the bottom of a chute.

    • 7

Win by reaching the No. 100 square by exact count or by landing on ladder square No. 80.
