Pokemon Master Trainer Game Rules

While Pokemon is known as a card and video game, it also has been made into a board game with Pokemon Master Trainer. In the game, up to six players capture and battle Pokemon in the hopes of becoming a Pokemon Master. Players collect Pokemon as they travel along the game board visiting towns seen in the Pokemon series. The first player to collect a set amount of Pokemon and defeat the Pokemon Master is the winner.
  1. Setting Up

    • Separate the 150 Pokemon chips by color and arrange them face down near the game board. Draw Pokemon chips from the piles and place them on the corresponding colored spaces of the board. For example, place a green Pokemon chip onto a green space. Do not turn over the chips. Place the Pokemon Rival cards face down on the Indigo Plateau space on the board. Place the decks of Item and Event cards next to the game board.

    Starting Pokemon

    • Each player picks one of the six Ash movers and places it onto the Pallet Town space, then takes turns drawing one of the Starter Pokemon chips. The player who goes first is the player with the lowest Power Point number, located directly to the right of the Pokemon picture on the Starter Pokemon chip. Play continues clockwise.

    Spaces

    • Roll one die and proceed across the game board. There are three types of spaces you can land on. City spaces allow you to draw two Item cards, Catch 'em spaces feature catchable Pokemon and Draw Event Card spaces allow you to draw one Event card and perform the listed action.

    Catch 'em

    • Flip over the Pokemon chip located on the Catch 'em space. Roll one die and attempt to match one of the two numbers listed on the bottom of the Pokemon chip. For example, to capture Pikachu you may need to roll a three or a five. A successful roll captures the Pokemon and adds it to your team. If you don't roll the needed number, move on and leave the chip face up.

    Trading

    • If you pass by a trainer during your journey, you can offer to trade Pokemon. Any Pokemon outside of the Starters can be traded. You may trade items as well to make the other trainer more likely to part with a Pokemon.

    Battle

    • If you pass a trainer you also can initiate a battle. Each trainer selects one Pokemon from his team to compete. Each player rolls one die. Add the Pokemon Attack Strength to the die roll for the battle damage. The player who scores the most damage wins the battle. Item cards can be used to enhance damage.

    Battle Outcome

    • The winner of a battle takes two item cards form his opponent. If the opponent only has one item card, the second card is drawn from the deck. The loser of the battle has his Pokemon knocked out, which means it cannot participate in battles or have his Power Points added to the trainer's total score until the Pokemon has been revived by a Potion card or at either Vermilion City or Cerulean City. If you arrive in either city, you must roll one die. Rolling a one or six will revive your Pokemon.

    Final Battle

    • Continue your journey until one player's Pokemon team has a Power Point rating totalling 20 or more. That player moves to Cinnabar Island. Move around the island during subsequent turns until you roll an exact count to land on the ̶0;Enter Final Battle̶1; space. The remaining players decide by dice roll who draws the Master Card and acts as the Pokemon Master during the final battle. The Master Card has a Pokemon listed as well as attack bonuses. Battle as normal. If the player scores a higher battle rating than the Master, he wins. If not, his Pokemon is knocked out and he must start back at Cinnabar Island.
