Multicultural Board Games to Make for Kids

Board games are a popular pastime for kids of all ages. While they can be extremely entertaining for children, they can also be beneficial. There are many board games designed for children that also stimulate a child's thinking or exercise their social skills. Multicultural board games, for example, can keep kids interested but provide them with a lot of information about different regions, countries, practices and customs.
  1. Customs

    • A fun trivia game for kids gives them a chance to learn about different customs around the world. Two to four players play the game. The objective of the game is to correctly place different trivia questions with the areas of the world they are referring to. A sample question could be, "In this country, it is a custom to have a large celebration for a young girl when she turns fifteen." Players correctly guess Mexico and receive a point. Not only will the children have fun, they will learn a lot about the world around them.

    Photo Match

    • Photo Match is an entertaining matching game for children to play. Play this as a board game or strictly as a card game. The objective of the game is to see how many different photographs you can match with the correct country. Two different stacks of cards must be provided. One stack should have cards with the names of different countries on them. The second stack should have different photographs that depict a variety of people, places and events from several countries. For each correct match, a person can advance on the board. For example, a photograph that shows a picture of Nelson Mandela would be matched up with South Africa. The first person to reach the end of the board is the winner.

    Multicultural Scrabble

    • Multicultural Scrabble is a twist on Scrabble that brings in a multicultural theme. The game can still be used with a regular Scrabble board and its game pieces, but the objective of the game is to receive extra bonus points for creating as many words associated with different cultures and customs as possible. For example, there would be more points awarded for spelling the word "haiku," which is a type of poetry from Japan, than some other words. Determine the point value of the words before the game is played. Different countries represent diffrent point levels. For example, a double word score could go to any words that come from South America.

    Olympic Experience

    • A game children are sure to enjoy is the Olympic Experience. This game divides between four to six players into teams. Each team is assigned to a different country that they will represent in the Olympics. The teams will receive an index card of information about their country. The objective of the game is to correctly answer questions about your country in different categories. Those questions will be in the areas of football, soccer, gymnastics, swimming and track. The team with the most correct answers gets to advance on the board.
