Game Instructions for Horse Sense

"Horse Sense" is a board game by Breyer that requires two to four players, ages 7 and up. Players answer true or false or multiple choice trivia questions about horses in order to collect ribbons and win the game. Players have the opportunity to steal ribbons from other players and to challenge other players with trivia questions. The game contains over 200 different trivia cards so no questions should be repeated in a single game.
  1. Setup

    • Select a horse game piece for each player. Place the horse game pieces in the barn area of the game board, which is where they will start. Shuffle and divide the trivia cards into the four designated categories. Place these cards on the four corners of the board in the marked areas. Collect and place the sets of four yellow, red, blue and round ribbons in the corners with the game cards, one set per stack of cards. Give the die to the youngest player and begin the game.

    Game Rules

    • Each player rolls the die at the beginning of her turn. Then she moves her horse game piece the number of spaces shown on the die. Players can move in any direction on the board. If a player lands on a purple trivia card space, another player must draw a trivia card from that section of the board and read the question aloud. If the player whose turn it is can answer the question correctly, she gets to take one of the ribbons from that section of the board. If her answer is wrong, her turn is over. Players must move to each section of the board and collect one each of the yellow, red, blue and round ribbons. The first player to collect all four ribbons and make it all the way back to the start area wins.

    Spaces and Cards

    • The "Horse Sense" board has several different types of spaces that require players to follow the certain directions. As previously mentioned, a purple spaces indicates a trivia question. A horse shoe space means the player must challenge another player by giving him a trivia question. If the challenged player answers incorrectly, the other player is allowed to steal a ribbon from his collection. If the challenged player answers correctly, he is allowed to challenge the original challenger by drawing another trivia card. A wrong answer means the original challenger will lose a ribbon to the challenged player.

Wild Cards are part of each trivia deck. If a player draws a Wild Card during a challenge, the same rules apply and the player must follow the Wild Card directions. If a player rolls the die and moves to the same space of another player, the player who was on the space first must return to the start area.
