How to Make a Refrigerator Scrabble Board Game

Bring Scrabble off the game board and onto your refrigerator for an ongoing game that your family can play as they hunt for food. The refrigerator Scrabble game uses letters with attached magnets that can be shifted around to form words or placed onto a game board created for your appliance. The game can incorporate bonuses as seen in the board game or can be used simply to expand your vocabulary on the go.

Instructions

  1. The Letters

    • 1

Print out a listing of letters onto card stock. Use a word processing program to create letters in the font and color of your choice. There are 100 letters in a standard Scrabble game. See the "Resources" section for a chart of the letter distribution.

    • 2

Cut out the letters so that each one is centered in a 1-inch square. Decorate the squares so that they can be displayed on the refrigerator as a decoration when not in use.

    • 3

Mark each letter with its point value. You can follow the guidelines of Scrabble or create your own values.

    • 4

Cut your magnet sheet so that you have as many magnets as letters. The magnets should not measure larger than the paper letters.

    • 5

Peel the backing off each magnet, and attach one letter to each magnet. Place the magnets on the side of the refrigerator.

    The Board

    • 6

Draw a 15 x 15-inch square board on a large sheet of paper. Each square should be 1 x 1 inch.

    • 7

Mark areas on the board for double and triple letter and word scores. Follow the standard of the Scrabble game, or place these bonus areas wherever you choose.

    • 8

Shade in each bonus area using colored pencils. Make sure the bonus is visible under the color.

    • 9

Attach one magnet to each corner of the board, and place it on your refrigerator. This board will keep your Scrabble games organized on the fridge.
