How to Host the Perfect Murder Game

Many people love a good murder mystery whether it's a movie, TV show or a book. Hosting a murder mystery game is an easy way to get your guests talking and excited for your party. Because your guests are working on solving a mystery together, it is also a useful technique to help people get to know one another. Murder mystery games used to be popular and accessible only around Halloween, but today these games have gained notoriety and can be rented or purchased any time of the year.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the right murder mystery game for your guests. Murder mystery games will have a theme and a time period. As such, choose one that will be suitable for all ages and dispositions of those you are inviting. Many games will display age suggestions on the box.

    • 2

Plan ahead by inviting your guests a few weeks in advance to the murder mystery party. This will allow them to prepare by putting together a costume. As most murder mysteries can only be played with a certain amount of people, it will also allow you to fill gaps if people cannot come. Most murder mystery games will include invitations that will outline the guests' character and give them costume suggestions.

    • 3

Prepare your costume by reading your character outline and costume suggestions.

    • 4

Prepare your home in the time period and geography of the region in which the murder takes place. If it is a 1970s mystery, make a 1970s music mix and decorate your home with peace signs and tie-dye. You can also purchase caution tape at most party supply stores or home improvement stores. Use it to "rope" off an area and use masking tape to make a "chalk" outline of a body.

    • 5

Before guests arrive, print out the information for each of your guests if needed. Many games will come with printed materials that you will also need to distribute to your guests.

    • 6

Insert the CD and distribute the materials to each guest after they have arrived and are ready to play.

    • 7

Follow the host's directions that will accompany the game. Most games require that each guest reveal and conceal certain pieces of information in each round. Certain players will have special physical clues that they must reveal, and it is the host's responsibility to distribute those clues at the beginning of each round.

Play out the game in accordance with the rules and the host instructions that came with the game.
