Strip the surface. Fill in any cracks or holes with wood putty before sanding. Use coarse sandpaper attached to an electric sander to remove old finish and smooth out the surface. Use a palm sander to smooth the edges. Then repeat with fine sandpaper.
Re-mark the board. Darken existing marks on the board with a carpenter's pencil. Stencils or vinyl letters can also be purchased to re-mark the board.
Apply finish. Pour lacquer onto the surface and spread it out with a paint brush. There are a variety of finishes available for shuffleboard tables. Polyurethane is a good finish to use. Apply multiple coats, letting each coat dry before applying the second layer.
Clean and polish. Let the the finish completely dry before cleaning with a household cleaner. Polish the surface with wax to make the surface smooth and easy for playing.
