The Lights
To create a light-up game, you will need parts that light up. A great way to create light-up parts is to purchase an electronics science kit containing a light. A second way is to purchase an electronic mini-kit that lights up. This second option will require some soldering to complete the kit. Make sure an adult is available to help with the soldering if you choose this second option.
When finding materials for the game board, be sure the electronic light-up component is compatible with your game board (e.g., if your lights get hot, cardboard can catch on fire).
Creating the Game
Your game should be balanced--there should be equal opportunities for anyone to win the game. The game should be both fun and challenging. Know your audience: All players must be able to participate fairly. For example, if some of the players cannot read, then don't include parts that require reading. Write down the rules neatly so everyone is able to read them. Better yet, type the rules.
Creating the Board
To create the board, you can use materials that have been recycled from other games, from boxes or from other projects. Be creative. Use a lot of color. Pick a theme and go with it. Make sure to leave a space for the game's lights to go. You can create a collage from magazines and newspapers, draw your own pictures, use photos, or create a document. Have fun with the game.
Creating the Pieces
You have many options for playing pieces. You can borrow the pieces from another game; create your own out of construction paper, clay, buttons or beads; or use pennies. Think about the theme of your game before creating the pieces and be creative. This is your game; have fun with it.
