Axis & Allies Miniatures Variant Rules

Axis and Allies Miniatures is a strategy game based around World War II. The variant rules are commonly used as "house rules" at MIT Games Club functions. When playing the by the variant rules, certain aspects of the game are adapted to allow players more options when moving, as well as to increase the difficulty for more experienced players.
  1. Map Modifications

    • There are several modifications to the game map when playing by the variant rules. The section of the map dedicated to Panama is divided into two separate sections on either side of the Panama Canal. In the section designated for Turkey, a land bridge exists connecting Turkey to southern and eastern Europe. This land bridge also allows players to move tanks and infantry units between the countries. The line that connects western Europe to Norway is moved to connect western Europe to Sweden, which also adjoins Sweden to the North Sea. The line that connects Africa with Spain is also moved at its narrowest point to make Gibraltar accessible from the Atlantic.

    Movements

    • A player's movements are limited on certain parts of the map. Ships that move on the surface can only move through a straight if that section is controlled by the player trying to move the ships across. Other surface ships may not cross the straight, but submarines can cross. However, in the section of the Panama Canal, submarines may not cross unless the section is controlled by that player. The only exceptions are in the sections of Turkey and Sweden, both considered neutral countries. Neither side can cross through straights in the Turkey section of the map, but both sides may cross through the straight in the Sweden section.

    Capturing a Captial

    • When a player captures another player's capital, the attacker is not awarded all of the defender's cash. Instead the attacker will receive half of the cash owned by the defender, rounded down. The remaining cash is destroyed. The player whose capital has been captured will continue to collect cash from other provinces he owns, but he cannot build any other structures.
