The Game of Life Board Game Instructions

Choosing whether to attend college or start a career out of high school is tough enough, but your choices allow you to reap the rewards and emerge as the richest player in The Game of Life. Luck plays a role in the game's outcome, but in your quest to retire as the game's wealthiest player, you should know some of the following game rules.
  1. Initial Set Up

    • To win the Game of Life, two to six players must collect as many Life tiles as possible and have the most money at the end of the game. Players collect tiles from the draw pile or other players upon landing on Life spaces.

If you act as the banker, distribute $10,000 to each player. Put the Life tiles down near the board, with the Life side facing up up (so no one can see the values); this will be your draw pile. Without looking at the tiles, pick four and put them on the Millionaire Estates space (where players can "retire" to at the end of the game).

    Career or College Path

    • Place a person in your car of choice. Before your first turn, decide to begin a career or go to college (which takes longer). Pick one career and salary card each; if you chose career, you want a career card that does not require a degree. Choosing college, you must take out $100,000 in bank loans.

Put your car on either the college or career space. Unless you reach a "stop" space, move your car the number of spaces you spin and follow directions of the space on which you land.

If you land on a career space, pay that person the specified value; if no one has that career, pay the bank. The police officer career has special benefits: If you spin a 10 (and if the officer catches you "speeding"), pay the officer $10,000.

    Color Spaces

    • You will see four color spaces throughout the board: Orange, for which you must follow directions; blue, for which you have the option to follow directions; green, for which you collect your "payday" salary; and red, for which you stop immediately and follow directions on any of three spaces--"job search," "get married" and "buy a house."

When you buy a house or during any following turn, you can buy homeowner's insurance. Pay the bank the listed amount and take one policy from the pile. You also can buy automobile insurance at the start of any turn. Pay $10,000 to the bank and take one policy. During any turn, you can take out a bank loan for $20,000. For each loan you receive, you must pay $5,000 in interest.

During the game, you also can buy stocks one at a time for $50,000, for which the bank pays you $10,000 whenever you or any player spins your stock number.

    Game's End

    • Upon reaching the board's end, pay all outstanding loans. After spinning the wheel a last time, follow the instructions on the deed and sell your house. Hold onto any stocks, as you still collect money each time someone spins your number.

If you feel you have the most money among players, put your car on Millionaire Estates. While on that space, other players can take Life tiles from you if the draw pile has no cards. If you do not feel you have the most money among players, put your car on Countryside Acres and wait until all players have retired. You receive one more Life Tile and other players cannot take your tiles.

Once all players have retired, all players at Millionaire Estates count their money. If you are the richest player, take the four Life tiles at Millionaire Estates. In the event of a tie, split the pile and take two tiles each. Count the dollar amounts and add the total to your remaining funds. Whoever has the most money wins the game.
