How to Make Your Own Movie Game

If your kids are growing tired of the same board games, word puzzles or charades contests on family game night, create your own activity that focuses on a favorite movie. Whether family members claim to be experts on a classic film, an animated hit, a modern musical or an action thriller, test their knowledge with a custom-made board game featuring questions about the characters, plot and dialogue. Make the game with basic craft supplies and game pieces that you already have on hand.

  • Card stock or decorative paper

Instructions

    • 1

Create the game board base by cutting a 12-by-12-inch square from a piece of poster board, chipboard or cardboard with scissors or a craft knife. Make the board more attractive by attaching a piece of colorful cardstock or decorative paper to the top with double-sided tape.

    • 2

Use a pencil or marker to draw two circles in the center of the game board to create the circular "track" for the game pieces to follow. Trace a 10-inch dinner plate to make the outer circle and a 6-inch plate or bowl to create the inner circle.

    • 3

Draw 12 lines on the circular track to create 12 spaces. Use a marker, letter stickers or rubber stamps and ink to add the word "Start" to one space and the word "Finish" to the space to the left.

    • 4

Trim 40 to 50 3-by-4-inch pieces of card stock to create the movie trivia question cards, and write a single question on each card about a character, line of dialogue, plot point, song, setting or actor. Write the answer upside down on the bottom of the card in tiny writing to make it difficult to see.

    • 5

Gather game pieces to use with the handmade movie game. Use tokens from other board games, colored poker chips, rings or coins.

    • 6

Play the game by placing the game pieces on the "start" spot and having the youngest player choose a question card from the pile, state his answer out loud and check the answer to see if he's correct. He moves ahead one space if the answer is correct, but if it isn't, the first player to shout the correct answer gets to move ahead one space. The first player to answer 10 questions correctly and reach the "finish" spot wins the game.

Store the game board, cards and game pieces in a 13-by-13-inch expanding polypropylene envelope sold at craft, scrapbook and photography shops. Featuring zippered or string closures, the envelopes are designed to hold 12-by-12-inch scrapbook supplies.
