Basic Gameplay
The success of each play in Stratomatic football depends on the ratings of the opposing offensive and defensive players, the defensive play called and a roll of all three dice by the offensive team's coach. If the white die reads one, two, or three, the offensive back's card values are used. If it reads four, five, or six, the defender's card values are used. On each player card, there are columns for each type of offensive play and whether the defense guessed the right play. For example, if the offense ran an off-tackle play and the defense guessed wrong, the "off-tackle wrong" column should be used to find the result of the play. Total the colored dice and look at the corresponding result for that number in the column. In this example, if the white die showed three and the total of the colored dice was five, you would look for result No. 5 in the "off-tackle wrong" column on the offensive back's card. This will be given in yards, so a result of "+6" means that the offense gained six yards on the play. The result may also be shown in negative yards if the defense wins the dice roll.
Running
There are three main running plays to choose from: end run, off-tackle and linebuck. You can also choose whether to run the play on the left side of the line or the right. The choice of side determines which offensive and defensive players will be matched against each other to decide the outcome of the play. It can also be a factor if the defensive coach has strengthened his team's run defense on a particular side.
Passing
When passing, the offense can select from five plays: flat pass left, flat pass right, lookin, short pass, and long pass. flat or lookin passes are intended to gain between four and 10 yards when successfully completed, while short passes will gain between 10 and 15 yards. long passes are intended to gain over 25 yards and are, generally, used when a team is desperate to score. The risk of a defensive interception or sack increases with the longer pass plays.
