Scrabble Game Instructions

Scrabble is a game played by two to four players. The objective is to gain the most points by using letter tiles with varying point values to create words. Words are valid only if they can be found in a standard English dictionary. Proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes cannot be used in Scrabble even if they appear in a dictionary.
  1. Basics

    • Scrabble contains 100 tiles, 98 of which contain a letter of the alphabet and a corresponding point value and two that are blank and may be used as any letter but has no point value. The blank tile must represent the original designated letter for the rest of the game. The game board contains five kinds of spaces--blank, Double Letter, Triple Letter, Double Word and Triple Word. Each space except a blank multiplies the number of points you get for a single letter or word. The board contains 225 spaces--15 columns and 15 rows.

    Playing the Game

    • Each player chooses seven random tiles from the tile bag without looking and places them onto his tile rack, keeping his tiles hidden from the view of other players. Players choose a player to go first and then take turns clockwise. Upon your turn, you must create a word with the letters on your tile rack. If you cannot make a word, you may trade for new tiles from the bag. One of the letters in the first word must be placed on the center square to begin. Each succeeding player must create a new word using one of the letters from any word on the board. Once you make a word, you may replace the tiles on your rack. If you used four tiles to create your word, you may take four new ones from the bag. Players may pass their turn if they cannot make a word.

    Scoring

    • Keep score throughout the game for each player. If a player uses all seven tiles to create one word, she receives a 50-point bonus. A tile on a Double Letter space has its point value multiplied by two; a tile on a Triple Letter space is multiplied by three; a tile on a Double Word space multiplies the total point value of the word by two; and a tile on a Triple Word space multiplies the total value by three. If a word falls on a bonus letter space as well as a bonus word space, multiply the letter value before calculating the word value.

    Ending the Game

    • The game ends when all the tiles are used or every player passes twice in a row. Add up the point values of the tiles that remain on your rack, and deduct this number from your score. The player with the highest number of points is the winner.
