How to Build a Crokinole Board

Crokinole is a centuries-old game of skill. Though often believed to be of Amish origin, the modern game probably dates from Ontario of the 1860s. Crokinole is played on an octagonal board marked with a series of concentric circles. Each circle is worth a certain number of points. The object of the game is to flick disks into the highest value circle. The winner is the player that achieves the highest total score.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circle 26 inches in diameter on a sheet of plywood. Cut out the circle.

    • 2

Mark the exact center of the circle. Place the compass point at the center of the circle and draw another circle 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Drill out this central circle to a depth of 1/4 inch.

    • 3

Place the compass point back in the exact center of the crokinole board. Draw three more circles, the first at four inches, the second at eight, and the third at 12. These circles should be in permanent ink or paint.

    • 4

Mark off eight points on the four- inch circle, each one 22 ½ degrees apart. Use a protractor to make the points even.

    • 5

Drill a hole at each of these points. Insert a wooden peg inside each of these holes. Glue the peg in place.

    • 6

Divide the area between the 8-inch and 12-inch circles into four equal parts by drawing four permanent lines between the two circles.

    • 7

Place the crokinole board onto a piece of plywood. Draw a hexagon around the board, leaving approximately two inches of space between the hexagon and the edge of the board.

    • 8

Cut out eight strips of plywood, each two inches wide and as long as one side of the hexagon. Glue these strips upright to each side of the hexagon in order to form a rail around the hexagon.
