How to Make a Spirit Board

Ouija remains one of the most mysterious (and some say creepiest) board games ever created. Are people really communicating with spirits when they hold the pointer, called a planchette, over the rows of letters and numbers, seeking answers to their questions? Who knows? What is certain is that it can be very easy to create your own spirit board and use it with your friends to attempt to talk with spirits from beyond-or maybe just argue back and forth that someone was actually moving the planchette.

Instructions

    • 1

Write or draw out all the letters of the alphabet on a sheet of paper, making sure all the letters are large enough to see clearly. The letters should all be capitalized, and writing them in a specific font like Old English works better. You can write the letters in rows (at least two is recommended), in a large circle or some other format.

    • 2

Add a row of all 10 numerical digits to the board, putting them in numerical order with 0 coming after 9. This row can go immediately below the rows of letters or in the middle of the paper if the letters are in a circle.

    • 3

Include the words "YES" and "NO" on the paper in the top corners, or at least above the rows of letters/numbers. Below those rows or at the bottom of the paper, add the words "GOOD BYE."

    • 4

Glue the sheet of paper to a piece of cardboard, fiberboard or wood. Cover the surface of the board with a substance that makes it easy to slide across, like a sheet of Plexiglas or a clear fiberglass resin.

    • 5

Create a planchette to use with the board. The most important part of the planchette is a lens that will pass over the letters, numbers and words. A magnifying glass lens without the handle can work, or you can just use a small drinking glass turned upside down.
