How to Make a Snakes & Ladders Board

Snakes and Ladders is a classic board game that is still popular among both children and adults. For children, the game can be a fun way to learn numbers, counting and the basic fundamentals of taking turns while playing games. Another bonus of snakes and ladders is that all game players, children and adults, have the same chances of winning, so there is no strategy involved whatsoever. The winner is the first player who reaches the 100 square on the board first.

Things You'll Need

Large piece of flat cardboard Poster board Scissors Glue Pencil Yardstick Markers

Instructions

  Cut a 24-inch square from the cardboard. Cut a 20-inch square from the poster board. Glue the two squares together and allow the glue to dry before proceeding.

  Draw a 10 x 10 grid onto the center of the poster board with a pencil and a yardstick. Each grid space should be a 2-inch square.

  Choose two colored markers to alternate for the game board squares. Color each square in alternating colors.

  Number the game board squares from 1 to 100 with a black marker starting with one in the bottom left corner. The number 10 will be in the bottom right corner. The number 11 will be just above the 10. The number 91 will be in the upper right corner and the number 100 will be in the upper left corner.

  Draw squiggly snakes onto the poster board with a pencil. Use the board as a guide to determine how long the snakes should be. Make two snakes that are approximately six squares long. Make one snake that is nine squares long. Make three short snakes that cover two to three squares. Color the snakes a bright color and cut them out.

  Draw ladder shapes onto the poster board with a pencil. Make two ladders that are approximately six squares long. Make one ladder that is nine squares long. Make three short ladders that cover two to three squares. Cut out the ladder shapes.

  Place the snakes and ladders at various places on the poster board grid, which will be your game board.
