Monopoly Rules & Regulations

Monopoly is the best selling board game in the world, according to the official website at Hasbro.com. It is sold in 103 countries, is produced in more than three dozen languages and has been played by more than 500 million people worldwide over the past six-plus decades. Here is a quick rundown of the rules for those who are unfamiliar with the game, or simply need a refresher.
  1. Object

    • The goal of Monopoly is to end the game as the wealthiest player. To do so, players must buy and sell land while gaining possession of property sets, building houses and hotels and trying to avoid paying rent to opponents while hoping they will be forced to pay rent to you.

    Preparation

    • Prior to the start of the game, each player chooses a playing piece to represent them and is given a total of $1500 in various bills (two for $500, two for $100, two for $50, six for $20, five for $10, five for $5 and five for $1). One player is then chosen to be responsible for the bank's money, and players decide upon turn order.

    Turns

    • Players then take turns rolling a pair of dice and advancing their token the corresponding number of spaces. Depending upon where each player lands, you may purchase a property, draw a Chance or Community Chest Card, pay rent to another player, collect or pay money to the bank, or be sent to jail for three turns.

    Buying Property

    • If a player lands on a space that no one else owns, you may either choose to purchase it or not. If the player chooses not to buy it, the bank puts the property up for auction and it goes to the highest bidder.

    Monopolies

    • If a player secures all types of a property, it is called a monopoly and they are allowed to charge more money (double the rent for color-coded properties). Also, with all property types except utilities and railroads, the owner of a monopoly may further increase the rent by adding houses and hotels.

    Selling Property

    • Properties may be sold to another player at any time, provided they do not have any houses or hotels on them. Alternately, a property may be mortgaged to the bank in exchange for one-half its purchase price, though mortgaged properties do not require players to pay rent if landed upon.

    Unique Spaces

    • Players who pass the Go space are given $200 from the bank, while players who land on Free Parking are not required to do anything. A player who hits the Go To Jail space or otherwise is sent to Jail must wait there for three turns, pay a fee or use a special card to be released and return to play.
