How to Make a Travel Risk Game

The world conquest game of "Risk" has been popular for years. But given the many pieces the game uses, it's not the best game to play when you're on the go. However, there is a way to design and play the game without all the army pieces and cards used, creating a travel version of the game to take with you and play on long trips.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencils
  • Felt markers
  • Laminating paper

Instructions

  1. Creating the Game

    • 1

Draw a replica of the "Risk" game board, making sure you include every country included in the game. You'll need to know how the continents and countries are described in the game for this, which isn't a problem if you have access to a full-size "Risk" game. Your drawn board doesn't need to be more than half the size of a regular board.

    • 2

Laminate your drawn game board. Make sure the laminating sheets you use can be drawn on with markers and erased with some form of rag. Don't heat press the laminated board--it will fold easily for better storage if you leave it alone.

    • 3

Fill out the names of all the game's continents and all the countries they contain on a sheet of paper. Leave a space after each country to numbers or dashes on. Make multiple copies of this sheet of paper.

    • 4

Add 3 to 6 felt markers of different colors (dry-erase markers work best) and pencils, along with at least one set of 3 six-sided dice (two sets may be better) and an old cloth rag.

    • 5

Find something to store the game in and transport it easily. A notebook folder for the papers and a small plastic bag for the other components (dice, rag, pencils and markers) may be all you need.

    Playing the Game

    • 6

Have each player select a color marker to represent them in the game. Each player will then choose a country on the map to occupy and mark it on the board with their color. Continue this in order until every country is occupied.

    • 7

Use the lists of countries to keep track of the armies you have as a player. Each player takes a list and a pencil and marks down one army in each country they occupy. They then count extra armies (one for every three occupied countries) and place them in any of their countries.

    • 8

Proceed with the game as it is usually played. On your turn, attack another player's country by rolling up to 3 dice (one for each army in the country you wish to attack). The defender rolls up to 2 dice, one for each army he can defend with. The highest numbers win and the loser removes an army for each roll lost. Continue until you conquer the country or no longer have enough armies to attack (you need at least two).

    • 9

Adjust the map and your list after the battle. If you conquered a country, wipe off the opponent's marker color with the rag and mark your color on it. Then adjust the number of armies you now have on your list by subtracting the ones lost in battle and marking the armies you're moving from the attacking country to occupy your new one.

    • 10

Continue in order of each player's turn until one player conquers the whole world. On each turn the player gets one army for every three countries he has (but never gets fewer than three extra armies) and distributes them as he sees fit. Since you're not using cards in this game, try this alternative: After every third turn in which a player conquered a country, he gets extra armies on the next turn automatically. It starts at four extra armies and increases by one each time.
