How to Play the Terrace Board Game

Terrace is an abstract strategy board game, and one that was featured on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The object of the game is simple: Get your T-piece to the opposing corner without getting your T-piece captured by your opponent. Each turn, you move one piece. The game looks similar to chess, with rules that are even simpler, but a strategy that can be very complex.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the board so the lowest point is in the lower left corner. Place your T-piece on that corner, and another tiny piece immediately to the right of it. Place two small pieces in the two spaces to the right of that, two medium pieces in the two squares to the right of that, and two large pieces in the squares to the right of that. Then, place a second row of pieces in the opposite order, going from largest to smallest from left to right.

    • 2

Take your turn by moving a piece up, down, sideways, or capturing.

    • 3

Move a piece upwards one level by moving it one square in any direction to a higher space.

    • 4

Move a piece down one level by moving it one square straight down, not diagonally, to a lower space.

    • 5

Move a piece sideways by sliding it along the same level it is currently on. You can move a piece as far as you like in this manner, as long as you stay on the same level, and do not cross the center of the board or any opposing pieces.

    • 6

Capture a piece by moving your piece one square diagonally downwards onto the piece you wish to capture. You may not capture pieces larger than your own.

    • 7

Capture the opponent's T-piece to win. You also win if you get your T-piece to the lowest square on the opposing side.
