How to Make a Board Game Box

You may want to make a board game box if the original box for a game has worn out, or if you’ve created your own board game and wish to store it away. Tag board, which is thicker than paper, yet thinner than corrugated cardboard, works well for most board game boxes. You can find white or colored tag board in craft supply stores, as well as, some dollar stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the folded board game, or the largest board game piece. Add about 1/2 to 1 inch to each of these measurements, for extra room.

    • 2

Decide how tall you need to make the board game box. Most board game boxes are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches tall, but some need to be taller for larger pieces.

    • 3

Double the height of the box and add this number to the length and width.

    • 4

Cut a piece of tag board the size of the length and width results from Step 3. If the tag board isn’t large enough, you may need to tape two pieces together.

    • 5

Use a ruler to draw a square the size of the height measurement in each corner of the tag board. Cut away each of the four squares. The areas between the squares will be the sides of the game board box.

    • 6

Fold up the sides of the box, between the cut away areas. You may want to score the tag board with a scissors to get it to fold more easily and cleanly.

    • 7

Tape the corners of the box together on the inside and the outside.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to make another box for the lid. It should be about 1/4 inch larger.

    • 9

Decorate the board game box lid using markers, or create a design on the computer, print it out and then tape it to the box lid. Make sure to include the name of the board game on the top and sides of the box.
