How to Play Blokus

Blokus (pronounced block-us) is an enjoyable family game that can challenge even masters of strategy. Two, three or four players can participate in a game of Blokus, and they can play a range of different variations of the game. The following steps outline just one variation of Blokus, but players can select other variations or can come up with their own.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the board. Every game of Blokus starts with an empty board.

    • 2

Choose your color. Every player gets a set of 21 pieces, each with a unique shape, and the color determines the order of play. Blue goes first, followed by yellow, red and green.

    • 3

Place your pieces in turn following the order given in Step 2. Each player must start in a corner, and each must place his pieces (after the first turn) such that each new piece touches at least one other piece of the same color. Additionally, pieces may only touch corner-to-corner. If at any point a player has no available moves, he forfeits his turn.

    • 4

Play until no more moves are possible. At this point, the game is over.

    • 5

Tally the score. Count the number of squares (not pieces) remaining, and subtract this from the player's score (which is zero, if you are playing only one game). If a player has placed all of his pieces, he receives a bonus score of 15, with an additional 5 points if his last move was the single-square piece.

    • 6

Declare the champion. Whoever has the highest score, after either one game or a series of several games, is the winner.
