How to Buy and Trade Property in Monopoly

Monopoly is a board game that thousands play every day. The original monopoly board is set up like Atlantic City, New Jersey. Today you can find Monopoly games based on Disney characters, Star Wars and super heroes. The rules are the same for each version of Monopoly, the board and the cards are different--depending on the version you're playing. To buy and trade property in monopoly, follow the steps below.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the game. Shuffle the cards for Chance and Community Chest and place them face down on the spots they go on the board. Each person playing gets $1500 in cash and picks a token. Place the token on the Go space. Roll the dice to see who goes first--the player with the highest amount goes first.

    • 2

Roll the dice and move your token the amount of spaces you rolled. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 2, then you will move 5 spaces.

Land on a property space and you can buy it from the bank if it is unowned for the price on the space. This is the usual way you buy property in monopoly. However, depending on the rules you choose to use, if the player doesn't want to buy the property or if he doesn't have the money to buy the property it is then put up for bid. For example, you land on Boardwalk but you don't have the $400 to buy it. The other players can then bid on the property starting at $400. The one who bids the highest, pays the money to the bank and gets the property.

Trade properties or cash to another player to complete a set. A set is having all the properties in one color. In other words, Boardwalk and Park Place are dark blue and they are a set. When you have a set, you can then build houses and hotels on any property in that set. This will help you to win the game since you can then charge more money when someone lands on the property. The rent you collect is marked on the property deed that you get when you buy or acquire the property.
