How to Play the 'Game of Life'

In 1860, a game known as "The Checkered Game of Life" was created. It was set on something resembling a checkerboard and players advanced from infancy to old age. It took 100 years before the game was modified to become the classic "The Game of Life," a family game enjoyed by millions.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the board. You'll need to put the spinner in the center and make sure it spins properly, and add the mountains and bridge to the designated areas.

    • 2

Shuffle the Share the Wealth cards.

    • 3

Choose a banker. The banker also is one of the players and can be chosen either by consensus or spinning the spinner. The person who gets the highest number on the spinner can be the banker. The banker gives each player $10,000.

    • 4

Select a car for each player. Each player uses a car as his game piece. Add a peg in the driver's seat for each player: blue for males and pink for females.

    • 5

Place the houses around the board. These can be purchased later when players are ready to buy their home.

    • 6

Deal the Share the Wealth cards. The banker will deal one card to each player. The rest of the cards are placed face down in the designated spot on the board.

    • 7

Have everyone spin the wheel. The player with the highest spin goes first and play then goes clockwise.

    • 8

Let the first player make her move by putting her car at the starting point and spinning. She must decide -- as will all players on their first turn -- whether to follow a career or college path.

    • 9

Move the number of spaces indicated and then act according to the color space. Most spaces are orange and the instructions on the space must be followed. Blue spaces are optional, green spaces are paydays and red spaces are special spaces that are explained separately.

    • 10

The next player takes his turn. If he lands on a space that is occupied, he moves to the next space and follows the directions on that square.

    • 11

Continue moving around the game board and following the directions. The player with the most money at the end wins.
