How to Build a Backyard Checkers Game

Build a checkerboard. The easiest way to create your game is to paint squares on a canvas dropcloth from any department or hardware store. Checker boards are typically made up of 64 squares of alternating colors. Go with red and black for a classic look or choose two colors that match your house. If you really want to get elaborate, you can mow squares into your lawn for a natural checker board.

Pick your pieces. The easiest and least expensive way to make backyard checker pieces is to use two colors of plastic or paper plates as checkers. Not only are they inexpensive and durable enough for a few games, they are easily stackable when you need to "king" your opponent.

Invest in heftier pieces. If plastic plates won't last long enough for your backyard checker habit, consider making pieces out of wood. By cutting round pieces out of medium density fiberboard or plywood, you can create inexpensive pieces that will outlast the weather. Paint them different colors and begin your game.

Keep score with chalk. If you plan to have a family tournament, build your backyard checker board near a sidewalk and keep a tally of your winnings with sidewalk chalk.

Use your board for other games. When you're done playing checkers, consider using your backyard board for chess, hopscotch or other family-friendly amusements.
