Research common chess tactics and practice implementing them in your games. Learning to use tactics such as combinations and double attacks can help to tilt games in your favor.
Learn to read chess notation. Many advanced chess resources will discuss chess strategies and tactics in an algebraic or "descriptive" form of notation, meant to record the moves of a chess match.
Takes notes during your chess matches. Noting your own matches allows you to review your mistakes and analyze the tactics that were used against you.
Visit an online chess resource or pick up a book on advanced chess strategies. Strategies differ from tactics in that the former is consciously implemented through the match and the latter is generally situational.
Review the chess notation of matches played out by advanced chess players. After learning to read chess notation and learning some advanced strategies, you'll have a better grasp of matches recorded between two professional players. Take what you learn and incorporate it into your game.
