How to Make a Felt Checkerboard

Design a checkerboard using felt for convenience when on the go and in between game nights. Tuck the rolled-up checkerboard in your backpack for a road trip. Fold the checkerboard into a flat stack that you can store on your bookshelf when not in use. You can also personalize your felt checkerboard by using any color combination, such as colors of your favorite sports team. You can also use the checkerboard for games other than checkers, such as chess.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an 8-by-16-inch square of black felt into eight 2-inch-wide strips. Cut each of the strips into four 2-inch squares for a total of 32 2-inch black squares.

    • 2

Spread out a 16-inch square of white felt on a flat work surface. Draw a 2-inch square grid across the surface, using a ballpoint pen.

    • 3

Place one of the black squares on one of the corner spaces on the white grid. Position the black square along the grid lines of the white felt. Skip a space and add a black square to the next space in the horizontal row. Continue adding the remaining black squares to every other white space; no two black squares should be side-by-side on the white felt.

    • 4

Apply fabric adhesive beneath each of the black squares. Press the black squares onto the white felt to secure these to the surface. Allow the checkerboard to dry before use.

    • 5

Cut 32 1-inch circles from a sheet of green felt and 32 1-inch circles from red felt. Use the circles for playing checkers on the checkerboard.
