How to Switch King & Rook in Chess

One of the oldest board games, chess simulates two armies in battle. Each piece has a different way of moving. The game also has special moves, such as castling. This move switches the positions of the king and rook in such a way that the rook helps create a shield to protect the king.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the bishop away from its starting position next to the king. Bishops move diagonally, remaining on the same color they started on. They cannot move past other pieces.

    • 2

Move the knight to which the bishop was adjacent. Knights move in an L-shaped path -- two squares in any direction, followed by one square in the perpendicular direction, or one square, and then two, following the same pattern. Knights can move over other pieces.

    • 3

Move the king two spaces to the right, and place the rook on the king's left side.
