Star Trek Chess Instructions

A three-dimensional version of chess was introduced in the original "Star Trek" series and made a number of appearances throughout the franchise. Andrew Bartmess, a fan of the series, came across the 3-D chessboard in the "Starfleet Tactical Manual" without rules. He wrote the book's editor, and was encouraged to create his own rules. Those rules were widely adopted and are known as the Federation Standard Tri-D Chess Rules.

Instructions

  1. Setup

    • 1

Set up the three main boards, each of which is a 4-by-4 square. Position the boards so the two rows on the lowest board overlap with two rows on the middle board. The opposite two rows on the middle board must overlap with the two front rows on the top board.

    • 2

Place the four attack boards just above the lowest and highest boards so that they overlap with these boards' outside corners. White and black squares must always be under the same color.

    • 3

Arrange each players' main board so it contains a knight on each back corner and two bishops in between. Place a row of pawns in front of them.

    • 4

Set a rook on the outside corner of each player's attack boards. Position the king or queen next to the each rook. The black player's queen must be on a black space and the white player's queen must be on a white space.

    Attack Boards

    • 5

Move an attack board that contains no pieces or one pawn to another attack board pin that is within two squares.

    • 6

Invert an attack board if it contains no pieces or no pawns. If the attack board was above a main board, move it below the board.

    • 7

Remove the other player's final piece to capture his whole attack board. Unoccupied attack boards cannot be captured.

    Movement

    • 8

Look at the board 2-dimensionally from above. Each piece must be able to make a normal chess move to the destination space.

    • 9

Move a piece up or down multiple levels as long as it moves from a main board to an attack board or an attack board to a main board.

    • 10

Move pieces within the game's limits. Do not move a piece between two main boards or two attack boards; do not move a piece vertically unless it moves at least one space horizontally. Other common chess moves, like pawn promotions and castling, apply in this version.
