How to Set Up a GNU Chess Board

GNU Chess is a user-generated software program that creates a formidable computer opponent for playing chess. The Free Software Foundation created GNU to make the best computer chess free and accessible to anyone who wishes to play. Players often use GNU Chess on Linux-based operating systems, and it can be downloaded for free from the official GNU website. Older versions of GNU can be played online for free. You will need to read the installation instructions for your computer's operating system before installation.

      Visit the GNU website (see Resources), click on a link to one of the many mirror sites from which you can download GNU Chess, and complete the download.

      Download and install XBoard or Winboard (see Resources). These are graphical user interfaces that work with many types of chess programs, such as email chess, Chinese Xiangqi chess, Japanese Shogi chess and Makurk, a form of Thai chess. It allows you to play with chess players all over the world.

      Start your GNU Chess program, click on "File" and choose "New Game." A new game will open, set up with the pieces in standard chess order.
