Online Tournaments
Kids can compete in online tournaments against other players. Chess websites often offer the option to play chess online for free and on the Internet browser so nothing needs to be downloaded. Kids can play against friends or other players who happen to be on the same website. Some websites offer site-side tournaments and rank the players, so the players can determine their skill levels.
Puzzles
Chess puzzles help kids learn to explore various chess problems and find solutions. A player usually starts with a chess board with the pieces already scattered over the board. He has to achieve something within a certain number of moves; for example he might have to check mate the opponent in three moves. If the player can't solve the chess puzzle, the website might allow him to see a possible solution to teach chess tactics.
If a player and his friend cannot agree on a time to play online chess together, they can try an email-based chess game. To play, a player makes a move on a virtual chess board and sends it to his friend's email address. After the friend makes another move, the original sender receives a notification in his email inbox with a link to the virtual chess board. The two keep taking turns making a move and sending an email notification until the game ends. Kids can play this game over several days, and they can also play several games with several friends at once.
Chess Referee
Some websites, such as Doodle Chess, offer chess games for beginners that include a referee feature that stops the player from making moves that are against rules.
