How to Create Chess Pieces

The time-honored "game of kings," chess has enjoyed a huge popularity among artists for the design possibilities of its pieces. As long as the kings, queens, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns are all identifiable in form and color, the game permits their use.
You can make your own chess pieces from nearly anything; for example, using playing cards, poker chips and dice to play chess.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe with 4-inch circumference
  • Hacksaw
  • 16 red poker chips
  • 16 black poker chips
  • Super glue
  • King of Hearts card
  • Queen of Hearts card
  • Four Joker cards (Bishops)
  • Red Pen
  • Black Pen
  • Two Jack of Hearts cards (Knights)
  • Two 10 of Hearts cards (Rooks)
  • King of Spades card
  • Queen of Spades card
  • Two Jack of Spades cards
  • Two 10 of Spades cards
  • 8 red dice
  • 8 black dice

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut the PVC pipe into 16 3 1/2-inch pieces.

      Glue red poker chips to both ends of eight pieces of PVC, and red poker chips to the ends of the other eight pieces.

      Wrap one card around each piece of PVC, making sure the color of the card corresponds to the color of the poker chip. Glue the cards down flat against the PVC&'s surface.
      Draw red hearts on the two joker cards on the Hearts side in red pen, and black spades on the jokers on the Spades side.

      Set up your opposing chess forces in standard formation, and fill the pawn lines with dice of corresponding color.
