How to Paint a Checkerboard

Whether you want to make your own chess or checkers game or you'd like to spice up a room, painting a checkerboard pattern is much simpler than you think. It may seem like a complicated procedure, but painting a checkerboard is not very difficult. You will need to spend time preparing the area to be painted before you begin. Once you get started, you will find that painting the design does not take much time.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose two colors of contrasting paint shades. Use a paint brush or roller to paint the entire area or surface with the lighter-colored paint. Apply a second coat and allow to dry completely.

    • 2

Decide how large or small the individual squares should be. Measure the surface or area and make a mark with a piece of chalk at the width of each square for the entire width of the surface area. Repeat to mark the width of the squares along the length of the remaining sides of the surface area. If the squares are 2 inches wide, mark every 2 inches along the width and length of the area to be painted.

    • 3

Place a chalk line across the area on the corresponding marks on parallel sides. Snap the chalk line to create a line across the area. Repeat to make a line at each mark on all four sides, resulting in the outline of a checkerboard pattern.

    • 4

Place a strip of painter's tape along the outside of the second row at the top of the squares. Place a second strip of tape along the bottom of the second row of squares. Repeat to tape off every other row of squares. Place a strip of painter's tape on the sides of each row of squares to be painted.

    • 5

Cover any area that will not be painted with painter's tape to prevent accidental painting.

    • 6

Apply the second color of paint with a paint roller. Use a light coat and allow it to dry. Continue adding light coats of paint until you have reached the desired color. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 7

Remove the strips of painter's tape from the area or surface.
