Tips & Secrets to Chinese Checkers

Chinese checkers, based on a game called Halma and introduced to the United States in the 1920s, is a game that can be played by two to six players. Chinese checkers is played on a star-shaped board, and the object is for a player to be the first to move all of his 10 pieces to the opposite home star. Individuals move pieces one at time or can jump over other pieces to expedite moving across the board. A player who employs strategy to use other pieces to her advantage often will gain the upper hand.
  1. Plan Ahead

    • Chinese checkers is a game of logic. Plan ahead and plot out multiple moves in your head. Try not to move your pieces without a purpose. Use your pieces as well as your opponent's pieces to your advantage.

    Play Defense

    • Stay focused. Keep an eye on your opponent's pieces, especially if your opponent is lining up his or her pieces to capitalize on jumping opportunities. Play defense by blocking your opponent's path with one of your own men.

    Move in Bunches

    • Move your pieces in bunches to create scenarios where you can jump over your own men. When you have your pieces in a row, keep jumping the last man over the other pieces to avoid leaving a piece behind. Moving a piece one space at a time is the slowest way to move across the board.

    Finishing

    • Winning at Chinese checkers requires you to get all of your pieces in the opposite home base first. Fill up the front row of the opposite home base first. Then keep filling out every other row. Filling out every other row maximizes your jump opportunities allowing you to fill out the home base in a quick and orderly fashion. After every other row is completed, aim to fill the farthest row and then advance your way up.

    Teams

    • Chinese checkers can be played with a teammate. Having more players creates more opportunities for jumping. Work together with your partner to set up hopping options.

    Get Experience

    • Only by playing can you get better. Play against a computer opponent or play against yourself using the board. By competing against yourself or a computer foe, you can learn basic moves and began to master the art of jumping. Also, the more you play, the more you can enhance your logic skills and learn how to plan several moves in advance.
