How to Play Chess With Fritz & Chesster

Fritz and Chesster is an educational computer game aimed at young children. The game teaches children how to perform the unique moves available for each chess piece, as well as the more intricate rules of the game such as castling a king and a rook. While the game features a "chess engine" capable of playing full games, it does not teach the player the game through chess matches, rather through games which demonstrate the principles being taught.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new user profile for every player that is using the game. Fritz and Chesster walks a player through the many rules of chess, so sharing an account between two people learning to play will lead to players missing lessons and, in turn, rules of chess.

    • 2

Explore the world around you by clicking on the scenery and items on screen. Fritz and Chesster seeks to encourage the player to pay attention and remain engrossed in the game by hiding eggs or other secret content throughout the various screens.

    • 3

Learn the rules of chess, such as how each piece moves, by progressing through the many mini-games.

    • 4

Continue moving through the mini-games until you have completed the game and learned all the rules of chess, so that you now know how to play chess. Some examples of mini-games in Fritz and Chesster include a sumo wrestling game which teaches players to move their king, a Breakout-like game which teaches about the bishop's diagonal moves and a maze game which teaches a player to move the powerful rooks.

    • 5

Play an actual game of chess with Fritz and Chesster's chess engine, either solely on your computer or with a friend online.

    • 6

Apply what the game has taught you to playing chess outside the Fritz and Chesster game, as it is ultimately a teaching aide, aimed at teaching the player how to follow the rules and participate in a chess match.
