How to Open a Chess Game

The game of chess contains strategies for attack. These battle plans start with the opening moves. Beginning players often have no set open moves, and therefore try different moves. More experienced players have found that some opening moves like the King's Pawn or Queen's Gambit Declined openings work very well.

Instructions

    • 1

Remember that developing your chess pieces should be the goal in the beginning. You do not begin an attack until you have the pieces developed.

    • 2

Figure that a good strategy is to control the center of the board. A strong position in the center provides you with better offenses and defenses. Pushing pawns down the middle can work if you control the center.

    • 3

Develop a few opening moves and test them out. Add openings that work well to your chess repertoire.

    • 4

Realize that white has the advantage because they get to move first, and black must respond to white. A common first move is to move the King or Queen's pawn two spaces to e4 or d4. This allows you to get your bishops out from the back row.

    • 5

Keep in mind that you can also make a first move with a Knight because it is the only piece that can "jump" over the other pieces. For example, consider moving the Knight on the right side of your board to f3.

    • 6

Respond to the white player who chooses to move his pawn to e4 by moving your pawn to e5. You can do the same if he moves his pawn to d4 by moving your opposite pawn to d5.

    • 7

Consider another defensive opening called the Sicilian Defense. Move your pawn to c5. Many opponents will respond by playing their Knight to f3. You can then defend with one of your own Knights.
