How to Get a Chess Rating

Getting a chess rating may sound intimidating, but not a complicated process. It can be acquired quickly and fairly inexpensively. Once your chess rating is established, it's recognized worldwide.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the United States Chess Federation (USCF) website (see Resources below) for details on how to get a chess membership. Membership is required for establishing a chess rating. Scholastic memberships are available at discounted prices.

    • 2

Find a USCF-sponsored chess tournament in your area. A list of tournaments is located in the back of Chess Life magazine, which is included with your USCF chess membership. Tournaments are also listed on the USCF website.

    • 3

Compete in the chess tournament, and then check your mail for your chess rating. You should receive it about two weeks after the tournament.

    • 4

Register in another tournament to raise your chess rating. Playing often will produce a chess rating that accurately reflects your current level of play.
