Travel Time Activities for Marriage Retreats

Marriage retreats provide couples with the opportunity to spend quality time together while also working on communication problems. Start the bonding session early by engaging in a series of games and activities on your way to the retreat. Light-hearted games can also help establish a relaxed and easy-going mood prior to the retreat. Choose activities that will not distract the driver from the road.
  1. Karaoke

    • Let loose with a bit of karaoke on your car ride to the marriage retreat. Compile a playlist on your MP3 player or a mixed CD featuring a compilation of both your favorite songs. Alternate turns with your spouse, with both of you trying to sing each other̵7;s favorite songs. Sing together by picking duets you both know and trading off on the two parts. Keep things light and don̵7;t worry about your singing ability.

    Scavenger Hunt/Bingo

    • Print out a list of various objects found on the road while traveling, such as street signs, out-of-state license plates and famous chain food restaurants. Work as a group by searching for the items on the list like a sort of scavenger hunt. Count how many items you find before reaching your destination. For a bit of competition, list those same items on two different bingo cards. The passenger will call out bingo letters pulled from a hat, as well as spotted roadside items found on the list. Highlight the matching items on the bingo cards. The winner is the first player to mark five items in a row. For safety purposes, put the passenger in charge of both cards.

    Games

    • Enjoy some classic travel activities, like the chain game. Start by picking a category, like athletes, actors or movies. One person names something or someone that fits the category. The next person must then name an object or person that starts with the last letter of the previous word. For instance, if the person names Peyton Manning for athletes, the next person must name an athlete that starts with the letter N. Try a round of 20 Questions as well. Think of a person, place or thing. Your spouse must see if he can guest the item by asking a series of twenty yes or no questions.

    Spousal Knowledge

    • Test your knowledge of your spouse. Prior to the trip, compose and answer a series of questions about each other̵7;s personal history and opinions. Once in the car, take turns asking questions of one another, such as ̶0;What̵7;s my favorite color?̶1; or ̶0;What̵7;s my dream vacation?̶1; as well as even more challenging questions like ̶0;What did I wear on our first date?̶1; Such a game allows couples to gauge how well they know each other either before or after the retreat.
