Levels
As you progress through the game, you'll encounter various enemies, all with different levels of ability. Pay close attention to their levels. If you fight someone on your same level, you'll be in for a serious battle, but you should be able to win. Picking on enemies below your current ability level makes for easy victories. However, attacking enemies who possess even one level higher than you can result in certain defeat.
Eggs
If you run out of pets during battle, you can run back to your incubator to hatch more pets. Pet eggs hatch in real time, so you may have some time to kill. Or you can always employ a simple time cheat. To speed up the hatching process, place an egg in the incubator and then change the time on your computer clock, moving it forward a couple hours. Now remove the hatched pet and then go back and restore your computer's clock to the correct time.
Healing
Find a location where you're blocked on three sides, and wait for an enemy to approach from the one opening. Defeat the enemy, who will then likely leave behind an item. Don't pick up the item. Leaving the item alone will serve to block off the only opening, effectively creating a protective barrier between you and your enemies. Now you can minimize the game screen and do some work or run some errands while your character takes his time healing, without fear of being attacked.
Money
You'll need money to purchase items throughout the game. Collecting ice shards can replenish your money supply in a hurry. Once you get to the ice stage, make it a point to grind through repetitive battles with enemies until you collect enough shards. Also, even passive enemies on the volcano stage may drop ice shards, so grab all you can.
Grinding
Grinding in RPG terms means engaging in boring, repetitive action simply to earn experience points and upgrade your character. In "Castaway," you can find a few areas ideal for grinding, allowing you to pile up experience points without much risk. The beach area prior to reaching the sand snakes provides plenty of easy enemies. You can also take advantage of grass beetles, snakes and scorpions in the grasslands. And the first two screens of the volcano level features lots of non-aggressive enemies who won't attack, making it perfect for grinding.
