How to Fix Center Caps on a DIY Cube

Speedcubing is the sport of solving Rubik's Cube-style puzzles as quickly as possible. Most cubes are manufactured as a toy or a game, with only limited use expected. Not all cubes are suitable for speedcubing, and many require intensive handywork before they can be used competitively. In addition, alterations are common among competitors with many experimenting with lubricants and methods to give them an edge in competition. The center cap popping off is a common issue in both competitive speedcubing and normal Rubik's Cube use.

Instructions

    • 1

Slip the edge of the knife blade behind the center cap, and pry it from the cube if it is not already loose.

    • 2

Lay the center cap face down on a hard surface. You will see a raised square in the center of the cap.

    • 3

Hold the hammer at a 45-degree angle to the back of the cap, and strike the raised square with the claw of the hammer four to six times. This will mar the plastic and help to hold it in place.

    • 4

Press the piece back into place over the center of the cube. Manipulate the cube for 15 to 20 minutes to ensure the cap is secured.

    • 5

Apply a tiny dot of super glue with a needle to each corner of the back of the center cap if it appears loose or pops off during this test. This glue bond can be broken easily next time removing the center cap is necessary.
