Help for Five Through Eight of Angry Birds

"Angry Birds," a wildly popular computer game now available in both free and expanded paid versions, was launched in 2009 and has racked up millions of downloads since. The game, based on a farm where a group of birds swears revenge after the farm's pigs steal their eggs, literally involves hurling these angry birds at the unrepentant pigs with a slingshot. The pigs, however, seek shelter in a number of improvised structures and the object of the game is to break through these structures in order to hit all of the pigs. Doing so requires some strategy and thought, as can be seen through a quick review of levels five through eight.
  1. Level Five: Using Structure to Your Advantage

    • In levels such as level five, where the pigs are all located in the center of a tall vertical structure, you can use the instability of the protective structure to your advantage. In the particular case of level five, aiming for the middle of the tower is an effective strategy. Even if the birds are not able to break through the stone layers on the first try, they can make the tower shake enough that the top layers come crashing down on the pigs below. In other levels with similar structures, think of ways to make the structure collapse rather than aiming for the pigs themselves. Making the structure do most of the work for your birds will also help you rack up points when unused birds are added to your total score.

    Level Six: Consider Materials

    • The pigs construct their shelters out of a number of different materials, each with its own properties and a different level of susceptibility to impact. Stone, for instance, can take several direct impacts to break completely, while glass will shatter almost instantly and wood is somewhere in between. In levels such as level six, where the sides of the pigs' shelters are made of glass, you should immediately take the hint and aim for these fragile sides. A single bird will be able to break through each of the shelters if you impact directly on the glass side, allowing you to target both pigs and still have a few birds left over for extra points. As a general rule, always look for glass elements in a level as an easy way to destabilize the protective structure or directly impact a pig.

    Level Seven: Trajectory

    • "Angry Birds" is essentially a physics puzzle and where your birds impact on the protective structure matters a lot. While the trajectory of a bird may be somewhat hard to calculate as you're winding back the slingshot and preparing to fire, every bird leaves a white dotted line in its path after being fired. Be sure to use these lines to judge the expected trajectory of the following bird and adjust up or down depending on the area you are targeting. Levels like level seven amply demonstrate the importance of a well-planned trajectory for your birds. Aiming for the wobbly bases or the fragile glass middle can yield a quick victory.

Level Eight: Using Each Bird to Its Fullest

    • Each bird in "Angry Birds," from the egg-dropping white bird to the exploding black bird, has a special ability and effect on the objects with which it collides. Understanding these attributes and using them to your full advantage is a vital part of success in "Angry Birds." The red birds in level eight, for instance, are quick and powerful weapons for direct impacts. Aiming a few at the large rocks suspended over the mountain will push the rocks over the hill and send them rolling down over the pigs below to handily advance to the next level. Always take your birds into account, think about their unique skills and try to apply them to the points in the structure where they could do the most damage. Simply put, know your angry birds.
