Look for an institution that offers chess lessons. For instance, contact Colorado Master Chess Inc., or your local library to learn about chess classes offered during the year. Ask your potential chess teaching institutions if they offer either private or group lessons at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
Visit websites of online training programs such as the International Chess School and IchessU, purchase their training materials and take part in live interactive chess courses. Spend a few months to a year reading lessons and participating in online instructional games and exercises. Watch online course video chess lessons to hone your skills as well.
Read books that explain chess playing strategies in detail, such as ̶0;How to Reassess Your Chess -- The Complete Chess-Mastery Course̶1; by Jeremy Silman and ̶0;Art of Attack in Chess̶1; by Vladimir Vukovic. Study how to avoid moving the same piece twice in the opening of the game, especially a pawn, along with other basic and more advanced chess principles.
Play a video game that allows you to play a chess game against a computer, which highlights your areas of strength and weakness. Consider purchasing Chessmaster 9000 by UBI Soft or WinBoard by Softonic, for example. Master skills such as getting your knight pieces off of their starting squares before moving your bishop pieces because the knights are easier to move.
Practice playing a game of chess with a competitor from a local college chess club or a friend who enjoys chess. Hone your skills with developing moves that effectively threaten your opponent̵7;s pieces. For instance, avoid bringing your queen piece out too early, as this is the most powerful piece, so plan to move your queen at the end of the game.
