Instructions for the Ship Captain Game

"Ship, Captain and Crew" (sometimes also known as "Battleship, Mariner and Destroyer," or just "Ship") is a dice game played with five dice between at least two players. The dice are usually rolled from a glass or cup. Players reserve certain rolled numbers that represent the ship (6), captain (5) and crew (4), then use the remaining numbers to tally their score. Ship, captain and crew is usually played for 10 rounds or until a certain score is reached.

Instructions

    • 1

Have each player roll two dice to see who rolls first. The highest number rolls first, second-highest second, and so on. Settle all ties with a subsequent roll of the dice.

    • 2

Place the dice into a small container and have the first player roll the dice. Remove any die that comes up 6, 5 or 4 in the first roll. Have the player roll two more times until he gets a 6-5-4 on three of the dice, in that order. For example, if the player rolls a 6 and a 4 on the first roll, only the 6 is reserved; a 5 must be rolled before a 4 can be reserved, but a 5 and 4 can be set aside at the same time, as can a 6-5-4.

    • 3

Record the score on the remaining two dice if the player was able to set aside a ship, captain and crew within the first three rolls. For example, if the remaining two dice are a 6 and 4, the player scores 10 points.

    • 4

Have the first player roll the two remaining dice again if he sets aside the ship, captain and crew in either the first or second roll in order to improve their score. For example, if the two remaining dice after two rolls read a 1 and a 3, the player can roll those two dice one more time to try to get a better score. Whatever the score in that subsequent roll is the score the player gets.

    • 5

Hand the dice and container to the next player if the first player could not get a 6-5-4 or after the first player's turn is over. Continue the game until a player reaches the predetermined final score or everyone has had the predetermined number of turns.
