Soccer Ball Race
The soccer ball race requires a soccer ball and at least three cones. If you don't have cones on hand, you can improvise with other items, like tennis balls. Lay down the cones or other obstacles in a straight line on the yard approximately 8 feet to 10 feet apart. Have the kids dribble a soccer ball around each obstacle while interweaving through each. Once they get to the end, they should turn around and repeat the course to finish.
Balance Beam Obstacle
The balance beam is a traditional obstacle for most kids. To set up a balance beam, find a wooden or metal beam that's at least 8 feet in length and 3 inches to 4 inches in width. Lay it down directly on the yard or place a concrete block under each end of the beam for added height. Have the kids navigate their way from one end to the other, turn around and go back to the start. Whoever makes it to the end and back the quickest is the winner.
Ladder Obstacles
Ladders can also serve as effective obstacles that are easy to set up. For this game, you will need at least one ladder, but having two or more is ideal. Lay the ladder or ladders down on the yard and create a starting line and finishing line. Have the kids begin at the starting line and run through each of the ladder's rungs and then on to the finish line. Whoever makes it the quickest is the winner.
Newspaper Course
The newspaper course is one of the most simplistic activities that only requires two newspaper stacks. Designate a starting and finish line and give a newspaper to each kid. Have the kids lay down one sheet of newspaper and stand on it. Then, they must lay down another sheet and stand on it. As they progress through the course, they must continually pick up the sheet from behind them and place it back in front until the finished line is reached.
