Activities to Help Youths Build Teamwork

Teamwork is a lesson many children carry throughout their lives. When teaching a youth group, you can organize a variety of team-building activities to encourage the kids to work together. The activities are entertaining at the same time, which keeps the children focused on their goal of building teamwork skills. Encourage players to try their best by awarding small prizes to activity winners or for a job well done.
  1. Balls

    • Have the players stand in a circle and hand one player a soft rubber ball or volleyball. Tell the players to hit the ball into the air and to not let it touch the ground. After one minute, add another ball. Keep adding balls until they drop a ball. Each time, the players should try to beat their high score and keep more balls in the air. Turn this activity into a game by dividing the teams into two groups. The team that can keep the most balls in the air wins the game.

    Sports

    • Sport games allow players to work together in teams. Put a twist on a game of soccer with three-ball soccer. Divide the players into equal teams. Use a pink soccer ball for the girls-only soccer ball, a blue ball for the boys-only soccer ball and a multi-colored ball for the co-ed soccer ball. Only girls can kick the girl ball and only boys can kick the boy ball. Anyone can kick the co-ed ball. The first team to score 10 goals wins the game. Alternatively, play the same way in a game of basketball or crab soccer.

    Blindfolded

    • Divide the group into two teams and give each team a tent. Tell the teams they must use teamwork to put the tent together. However, they must do it blindfolded. The players must work together using verbal communication to put the tent together. The first team to put the tent together wins the activity. Another idea is to create an obstacle course using ropes, chairs and hoops. All players must put on a blindfold except one. That player must guide all the blindfolded players through the course.

    Water

    • Ask the players to sit in a circle and take off their shoes and socks. Lift a bucket of water in the middle of the circle and have the players place their feet on the bucket to keep it in the air. See how longs the players can keep the bucket of water in the air. Players cannot use their hands. Have them keep trying to beat their longest time. Alternatively, have two teams compete against one another to see who can keep the bucket of water in the air the longest.
